Today’s Focus

I have to win

Today I will …

Eat well.

Exercise.

Wake up Early.

Spend a few hours on my business.

Put out a new blog post.

Spend time with my family.

Think deeply.

Strategize.

Read a book.

Execute my day’s plan.

Because, truly, the final destination is death.

New Projects

Starting a new project is fun.

The excitement comes from being the architect.

At the beginning, I’m an architect. Anything I want is available. Opportunity abounds.

Once that thrashing is done I lose interest. Following through is going down a path that I have already seen. It’s boring. I delegate the boring. Delegate through scale by hiring and outsourcing.

I do the hard part. Thinking. Dreaming. Thrashing. I know myself well enough to know and do what I enjoy.

And it is amazing. There is no win-lose in this situation. There is only the art form. Intention. And all the creativity you can muster.

Are you passionate about what you are doing?

If not, you are doing it wrong.

Me? I love to consume stories. My mind craves a solid storyline. The medium doesn’t matter. Even language is not a barrier to a good, solid story.

And, my love of story has led me down my path.

Clarity in Writing

The Basics

I like to talk.

I want to write more

And I think it’s important to document where you came from and where you are going.

The Issue

When I think about writing my brain goes in so many directions it is hard to understand.

I start in one place. But follow tangents that are only slightly related.

When I write how I think than the reader will have a hard time understanding

The Solution

Now, I do the exact opposite of my thinking.

I structure my thinking into an outline before I get into my subject.

Taking it back to my school days.

Outline. 1st Draft. 2nd Draft. Final Project.

Instead of rushing the assignment the night before.

And, I realize that I have a lot to say that is new.

Before my problem was that I didn’t know how much or how little to put down.

But with my framework, I know exactly what to do and can write much more than before.

[Tweet “Writing with clarity and style is easier with a framework.”]

And that is the goal, clarity in writing.

Expressing myself and sharing my knowledge with you.

Second Guessing

Spending time doing this is useless.

Do your best.

Then…

Let the chips fall where they may.

Serendipity is magic.

Perfection is not worth the extra effort.

Put in work, hustle, plan, and execute.

Analyze what worked and what didn’t.

Do more of the former and less of the latter.

It’s not a hard formula.

Is this exactly what I wanted to say here?

Yes, No … Maybe?

Whatever, it’s said.

Have a great day!

And, HAPPY MONDAY!

Idea Remix

That’s what I’m after. The good ones that lead to better ones.
Actionable. Testable.
Simple or complex; doesn’t matter.
The logical flow next step previous ideas. Extensions on top of what works.
Think about it.
The idea is old school, it’s the execution that’s original.
That’s what good jazz and classical music are all about. Knowing what perfect looks like and putting your style on it.
It may take years of training. But the outcome is worth it.
Stay the course. Remix the old until you find yourself.

For the weekend

Been hustlin’ all week. And it keeps going this weekend.

What I’m Reading –

Just picked up “Steal Like An Artist” by Austin Kleon. Love it so far. My favorite line, “Steal the thinking behind the style”.

What I’m Listening To –

Went back to some rap. “Believe Me” by Lil Wayne (Ft. Drake). Needed a change up from the classical electronics, country, and smooth R&B.

What I’m Watching –

Just got into Luther on Netflix. Trying not to spend too much time watching.

Podcast Addition –

Heavyweight by Jonathan Goldstein & Gimlet Media. The title does justice to the content. The first episode gave me feelings.

Thanks for reading!
